february
spay neuter promotion was a success!
During
the month of February, The Animal Refuge League
joined forces with the Animal Welfare Society
of West Kennebunk, Coastal Humane Society of Brunswick
and area veterinarians to tackle the seemingly
insurmountable problem of cat overpopulation by
promoting low cost spay neuter surgeries for owned
cats. Because of the generosity, hard work and
enthusiasm of these veterinarians and their teams
of technicians, roughly 600 owned cats were spayed
and neutered, potentially preventing thousands
more kittens who would eventually find their way
to animal shelters and in need of being re-homed.
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland would
like to recognize the following veterinary clinics
and their skilled staff for their generosity,
hard work and enthusiasm in participating in February’s
month long challenge:
Brackett
St. Veterinary Clinic
Forest Ave. Veterinary Hospital
Scarborough Animal Hospital
Westbrook Animal Hospital

Nearly 17,000 cats are euthanized every day in the United States. Many of these animals are healthy and adoptable, but there is no one to care for them. Spayed and neutered cats also have a reduced risk of hormonally-related illnesses and display less signs of behavioral problems.
