country
kitties
Country Kitties
is a program launched by the Animal Refuge League
(ARL) in 2008. Occasionally cats are brought to
the ARL that are not suitable for living the indoor
life in your home. These cats are not domesticated,
but most still enjoy being petted and shown affection.

foster
program
make
a new friend
Consider opening your home to an
animal seeking a temporary foster home. Each year
the ARL takes in hundreds of animals — cats,
dogs, rabbits, birds, and rodents who need additional
time, rest, recuperation, medical care or socialization
before ready for adoption. We depend on our dedicated
foster families to fill this gap and give these
animals a quiet respite away from the hubbub of
shelter life.

paws
in stripes
Paws
in Stripes is a partnership between
the Animal Refuge League and the Maine Correctional
Center in Windham. Prisoners who take part in Paws
in Stripes play a major role in the socialization
of select puppies from our shelter. The prisoners
teach the animals basic manners while helping them
experience a variety of new people, places, sounds
and textures.

senior
pets for senior people
Seniors to Seniors
is an exciting new community outreach program geared
for seniors in the greater Portland area. The Animal
Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARL), located
in Westbrook, ME launched the program to help place
senior cats in permanent homes with senior people
in the community. The outcome will give senior cats
a second chance at life as well as provide companions
for local seniors. Staff at the ARL will (upon request
from senior centers, senior recreation programs,
assisted living facilities, nursing homes), conduct
a short seminar discussing the benefits of the program,
as well as cat care. |
