Just
as we thought the temporary shelter in Portland would be
shut down, two more puppy mills needed immediate
attention.
In late December a mill in Greene, Maine was seized
with nearly 90 ill and emaciated dogs removed. Most of
these dogs have been adopted, as
ownership was signed over quickly. The dogs being contested
are moving to long term foster care in the coming weeks.
Last week a mill in Somerville, Maine was raided, and while
many
animals went to the Lincoln County Shelter in Edgecomb,
many also came to the Portland facility. These dogs remain
in
legal
limbo.
For those wishing to donate, our need in Portland is for
soft bedding. We do not have a need for newspapers,
but bedding
that can be easily laundered, such as towels, blankets,
sheets and comforters that can be cut into smaller sizes
is most appreciated. Donations
of food, newspapers and bedding are needed at the Lincoln
County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb, Maine.
(207) 882-9677. Of course, monetary donations are desperately
needed as these dogs are in poor health and require
extensive medical and dental intervention. Donations earmarked
for Lincoln County
can be sent directly to the shelter or to the Animal Welfare
Program, 28 State House Station, Augusta.

Our Paws in
Stripes program was featured on the weekend edition
of "207" recently, and the stars of the show
were some of our puppy
mill survivors. It is amazing what time, attention
and love can do to influence the lives of these dogs
and their handlers
New dogs available for adoption they will be profiled on
this website as well as that of the Animal
Welfare Society.
The following shelters and rescue groups will also have dogs from this situation available for adoption in the next months:
Animal Welfare Society, West Kennebunk
Journey
Animal Rescue, Freyburg
