The PHS Crochet
for a Cause Club made gorgeous handmade mats
for the kittys here. Mr. March, pictured
to the left, loved his mat so much he was
kneading it! They certainly are cozy beds,
but are also a nice background to show off
our beautiful
cats.
The mats
are especially impressive when you know all
the members had just learned how to crochet!
Well done Crochet for a Cause! Thank you!!!

This is Bella.
Most days you can find her out in her front
yard running a lemonade stand and playing
her trumpet to earn money just for the Animal
Refuge League. Thank you Bella!

Each month,
The Driving Force gives to a local group,
and the Animal Refuge League is the fortunate
recipient for March. The Driving Force is
an organization created by
Katie Elliot (pictured) and she raised over
$200 for the animals here. Katie, thank you
for your passion, generosity and kindness
and for all you do for your community!

Sixth grade students in technology
education classes at Lyman Moore Middle School
completed a service learning project with the
Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
Students made and sold weighted hula hoops to
raise money for the Animal Refuge League and
for Lyman Moore's Wellness Team. They presented
a $250 check to Kathleen Fobear, the League's
humane education director.
Students and teachers have discovered hula hooping
to be a fun way to become physically fit. The
hoops are weighted with water and made in three
sizes for different levels of expertise.

As part of a school
project, the third graders in Mrs. Rudolph’s
class at Great Falls Elementary School in Gorham
wrote fictional
stories about
the animals in the pictures. Kathleen Fobear, the
Humane Education Director, came to the class and
spoke about the work at the Animal Refuge League.
The students then incorporated what they had learned
into the stories. Also,
with the help of Mrs. Simpson’s
Kindergarten Classes, the students organized
a school-wide donation drive. The response was
overwhelming! Here is just some of what they
collected:
• 1, 593.8 lbs dry dog food
• 95.25 lbs dry cat food
• 11 lbs guinea pig food
• 130 cans cat food
• 31 rawhides/chewies
• 23 dog toys
• 26 cat toys
• 4 large bags bedding/towels
• 5 rolls paper towels
• 1 bottle dish soap
• 1 bottle hand sanitizer
• $40 Blue Seal gift cards
Thanks
so much to Mrs. Rudolph and Mrs. Simpson’s
classes and all the students, staff and parents
at Great Falls School!

The
book club at East End Community School read “Ghost
Dog Secrets” by Peg Kehret, a story of
a dog that was mistreated. The club then decided
to help mistreated dogs by having a fundraiser
to benefit a local animal shelter.
Students sold homemade donuts donated by The
Holy Donut and coffee donated by Coffee by Design.
Their
sale raised $492.
“
We purchased dog toys at Planet Dog with some of
the money and then we delivered the toys and the
rest of the money to the greater Portland Animal
Refuge League,” said teacher Karen Fream,
who leads the book club. “It was a great
learning experience and a wonderful cause!”
Thanks EECS Book Club!
