reporting a found pet
If you have found an animal, check with your neighbors to be certain the animal does not belong to them.
If you cannot locate the owners nearby, please contact your police department through the non-emergency number.
If you are not willing or able to hold onto the animal until the owners are located, please ask your town's animal control officer to retrieve the animal. They will then transport the animal to the appropriate shelter.
If you are willing to hold on to the animal, ask your police department or town hall about state and municipal laws concerning mandatory stray animal holding periods, and give an animal control officer a description of the animal including:
- the type of animal
- length and color of coat
- color and type of collar if there is one
- sex if it is easily determined
- any identifying marks, scars, tattoos or any other distinctive features
- your name, address and telephone numbers
- the date and location the animal was found.
If you do not know what shelter the town uses, ask the police department or town hall. Contact the appropriate shelter and leave a description of the animal and your contact information.
Posting signs in the area can be very effective. Be sure to include a description of the animal and your contact information.
If you have any other questions concerning stray animals, please contact the shelter during normal business hours. |
