Meet Callie. She is adorable, super sweet, snuggly, athletic, and
clever. Our best guess is that she is a terrier/beagle mix. Five
month old Callie has had a rough start in life. She and her 4 littermates
were confiscated from a southern puppy mill and up until she was
4 months old, she only knew the inside of a filthy kennel. Callie
needs remedial socialization, and she needs to learn that life
and people are good. Currently we would classify her as special
needs and it will take a special person help Callie to gain confidence
and to be all that she can be. Callie and her 4 littermates were
placed in the Paws in Stripes program at Windham Correctional.
All 5 pups had skin conditions
that needed weeks of care. Callie is now spayed and her skin totally
clear, but we have pulled her out of the prison program because
she was afraid of the woman guards. Callie is most the fearful
of the five puppies and in the short time she has been in foster
care, she has bonded with foster Mom
and her two young daughters, but she will still not accept the
15 year old son. Callie is very slow to warm up to new people,
and new situations. While we have seen her bond well with children,
the hustle and sweet chaos of life with kids is not a good choice
for Callie. She needs to meet new people very slowly and at her
own pace with lots of positive reinforcement. It is common for
puppy mill dogs to do well in the company of other dogs and we
feel that Callie may learn about the world quicker
in the company of other dogs. Callie adores all dogs and would
do well in a home with other dog buddies to play with and learn
from. Callie has gotten on great with a variety of dogs in her
foster home. Callie is a sweet petite snuggler who deserves a chance
at the good life. Her positive reinforcement training will need
to be continued
in her new home. She is not yet ready to attend a group training
class but Callie's adoption comes with free phone and email consultations
from the Paws and Stripes dog trainer who has gotten to know her
very well. Even though she is small, Callie will require exercise
daily. Currently her exercise needs are being met playing fetch
and running (and running!) with the dogs in her foster home.
Callie is crate trained and her new home will need to continue
her house training where she is doing well, but is not quite totally
reliable.
Callie will sleep in her crate at night but she prefers to snuggle up next to
you.
***Callie is not at the shelter and she will remain in foster care until placed.
Arrangements will need to be made in advance to meet her. ***
