UPDATE 5/7/10: Tootsie is making wonderful progress. As she started to feel better following her eye surgery, and no longer had to use so much energy in dealing with pain and difficulty seeing, she redirected some of her energy into a fun game she thought she invented called “playing tug-of-war with the leash.” To teach her more acceptable outlets for her newfound happy energy, we provided her with a volunteer mentor, who reports that she and Tootsie are successfully working on the commands “wait” and “slow,” as well as “drop” and “leave” toys and the leash. A firm “ah ah!” is used when unwanted behavior crops up, and for positive feedback praise and treats are working beautifully. Tootsie has quickly learned “sit” and “shake.” Throughout her stay with us Tootsie has remained quiet and well-mannered at heart, and has now started learning the rules all good pets should know.

Young Tootsie was in sorry shape when she arrived as a stray with bilateral entropion, a turning in of the lower eyelids, as well as badly lacerated ear tips. We don’t know Tootsie’s history, but in her 8-10 months of life she must have had a rough go of it. Now she’s safe, and on the mend. She recently had surgery to correct her painful eye condition and repair her ears, and is healing well. The next step is a good home. Tootsie is, understandably, a shy girl, but she is willing to trust and eager to please. Adopters should be aware that overwhelming Tootsie with new experiences will slow down her integration into a normal life, but introducing her to the world at her own speed will be its own reward. This is a pup who is prepared to give people the benefit of the doubt, and being her owner comes with a responsibility to respect her need to observe from a distance until she gets her courage up. Earn her trust, and she’ll give you her heart too.
