profile

Apache is a strikingly handsome Lab/Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. At just ten months old, he is ready to find his forever home with knowledgeable people experienced with the psychology of working dogs. Young Labs are well known to be physical and highly energetic, but the less well known Catahoula, while at least as energetic, is a lot more dog. "Because of their working background, Catahoulas require constant mental stimulation and hard physical exercise to be good companions. One to two hours DAILY of running or hard play is just the beginning. Also, Catahoulas must have obedience training - they are an assertive breed and can quickly take over a household if given the chance. Catahoulas are intelligent, loyal, independent, protective and highly entertaining! Most people who are ‘owned’ by these dogs would never have another breed.”* “Catahoula Leopards are extremely agile and athletic, territorial, protective of ‘their property’. They are more primitive psychologically than most breeds and need consistent obedience reinforcement. The owner must…stay in control at all times, but still be loving to the dog. Very loyal, loving, intelligent and independent...they really think for themselves.”** In his most recent home, Apache found the perpetual motion and noise level of young children to be unnerving, so children in his new home should be over the age of ten. Apache is a shy boy who doesn’t blindly trust strangers. His new owners will need to help him catch up on socialization outside the home slowly and gently, at his own pace. This takes patience and kindness, but the result will be a happy and confident dog with a justifiably proud owner. Adopters will receive a discounted rate at our canine education classes, which will help to build a nice bond quickly so that they and Apache can get on with his real-world education. Attendance is highly recommended. Other resident dogs may be okay with an introduction first. Apache has no experience with cats.
