Finally, the Cockatiels are ready! On August
12, 2008 seven cockatiels were surrendered to the Animal Refuge
League because their owner could no longer care for them, due
to health. When they first arrived, these birds could not perch,
but would hang onto bars on the side of the cage. Their ceres
were flaking and their nasal passages were enlarged due to a
poor diet and one bird had had all the feathers on her head pulled
out by the other birds. All the birds were suffering from a vitamin
A deficiency. Well, after all these months, the birds are ready
to go home! The staff at the ARL, working closely with a local
veterinarian, has switched all the birds to Harrison’s
Pellet bird food with a supplement of Sunshine Factor. All new
owners of these birds must keep them on this diet in order to
help them continue to become healthy, happy birds. The birds
will be available as you see them in the pictures. None will
go home singly because the vet believes that they will deteriorate
mentally without another bird, as they have lived in a flock
their entire lives. Although they had not been handled regularly,
they are really coming around. They love to whistle and be spoken
to and are also getting use to flying. They will need regular
out of cage exercise time in order to work off the extra ounces!
The vet that has been working with these birds believes with
a kind word and a gentle hand, these birds will really begin
trusting people and be wonderful pets! If you are looking for
cockatiels, look no further than the ARL! We Have Birds!
