This is Blue. Blue is a beautiful female parakeet
that seems wise beyond her breed! She is very interested in everything
that
goes on around her and loves to be talked to. With work, she will
love to be handled again, as well! Blue is a little over three-years-old
and she had a rough start here at the ARL. She was surrendered
to the shelter because she had attempted to lay an
egg (to the surprise of her owner who had her for three years and never experienced
this with her) and it got stuck. We immediately rushed her to the vet and they
detached the egg and Blue seemed as good as new! It only took a couple of days
for her to recover and she began eating Harrison’s bird pellets immediately.
Blue now seems to have fully recovered except for the fact that she is hand-shy.
Already, she has lightened up on her bite so that it no longer hurts but will
require further handling by a gentle, quiet adult in order to become the pet
that she once was. Blue will not be made available to a home where a child
will be the primary care provider and the staff at the ARL prefers that she
remains
an “only
bird” so she does not become encouraged to lay another egg. The odds
of this recurring are rather good and she should be seen by a vet at least
once per year and her new owner will have to keep an eye on her. The cage,
like with all birds, will need to be cleaned daily and it is preferred that
she remain on the Harrison’s bird food to ensure that she remains healthy!
Come meet this wonderful girl at the ARL today!
